The 21st century “extended, telecommunications” Family Home Evening. We enjoyed spending the evening eating and connecting with the family. It’s always great to see everyone. Parker’s joined from the road. Eric’s family sat reverently at the iMac. Sorry we missed Texas Baldwin’s.

We discussed what lessons we learned from conference talks.

Lake Powell: Reach the Beach

Shortly after arriving at the pier, we were inundated with a fierce thunderstorm consisting of down-pouring rain and wind gusts. Paul was skeptical about finding a beach that evening with the fear of bad weather and bad waves. Fortunately, the storm passed and the evening ended up proving a beautiful one. It was perfect for driving the houseboat to the perfect beach spot.

Rock Climbing Countess

Bridget has always been a good little rock climber. From the first time she tried it, she has been a natural. I don’t know that I would want her to take up the real thing, but it shows her coordination and her strength. She’s a good athlete.

Red-Brown Belt to Brown Belt

Jed advanced to a Brown Belt in Karate in July, but could not make it to the Belt Celebration until September. So he was a Brown Belt, but he didn’t get his new belt until he participated in the ceremony. The movies are getting longer because Jed is becoming more advanced and therefore knows more strikes, blocks, kicks and jump-kicks, as well as the katas. He is one coordinated boy.

The other day I was at my Dad’s house. He showed me a picture of himself from his college yearbook and asked me who I thought it looked like. It didn’t take me long to respond “Dallen.” I have been going through family photos and found further examples of how much Dallen looks like my Dad. Even from boyhood.

Here’s a short clip of video that I forgot I had. It’s Dallen teeing off on the Koolau Golf Club in Hawaii, ranked the hardest golf course in the United States. And boy, was it tough with all the carries over ravine after ravine in the fairway or all the trees and vegetation.

Another Year as an AF Cavemen Golfer

Dallen made the American Fork High School Golf Team again this year as a Sophomore. He worked hard practicing and getting his score down to make the cut. He was sweating bullets, but pulled through. Dad got him some new clubs this year, which helped lower his score and make his game more consistent.

Daddy had to go to the bank today. Abby was begging for breakfast at “Old McDonalds,” which didn’t interest me. We had to find a compromise. That’s when I saw the “Hot Dougnuts” sign. We ended up watching donut making and glazing followed by chocolate milk and a red, white, and blue sprinkles-covered donut.

Amy and I took a drive tonight on the Alpine Loop, a mountain road from the mouth of American Fork canyon, around the back of Mt. Timpanogos on a narrow and winding road, and out Provo canyon. We stopped for a few pictures and went on to the Foundry Grill at Sundance resort for dinner. A few snapshots from our drive, including a cute Amy in the aspen grove.

I came across this photo as I was editing photos for a movie I am making for our Primary. I thought that it was a pretty good indication of Bridget’s personality. She’s going to kill me when she sees that I chose this one over the other one with the “normal” pose. Funny.

Oakcrest LDS Girl’s Camp Staff of 1984

I attended the 50th Anniversary of Oakcrest LDS Girl’s Camp in Woodland, Utah, where I was a counselor during the summer of 1984. Our staff actually had a 20 year reunion four years ago, but I failed to take any pictures of the camp while there. I was too tired. I was nine months pregnant with Abby.

I thought that it would be fun to take Abby with me on Friday. She had fun, although we stayed in the lodge far too long. We should have walked around the camp more and taken more pictures. She enjoyed the singing, and she flirted with my counselor friends. She enjoyed all of the attention.

I can’t believe that it has been 24 years since I was a counselor there (It’s been 30 years since I was a camper). I feel so old, especially when the current counselors would ask you what year you were there and then gasp when you told them. The majority weren’t even born yet.

Ah, but what a fun summer. My Dad got mad when I told him how much I made after working five days a week, 24 hours a day for three months. I tried to help him understand that it was not for the money, it was for the experience. But he wouldn’t hear it. It was a fun summer. There haven’t been any more like it since.

The nice thing about doing the video for the dance recital is that you have all of the footage. So now that the video is finished and ready for distribution, I can take some time to put up Abby’s number. The dance recital’s theme was High School Musical and Abby’s class did their dance to HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA’A. As you can see Abby was more interested in what her friend, Magan, was doing than in following the teacher’s actions. Abby is the third from the left.
