I’ve been scanning documents and photos from a scrapbook that my Grandma Graff made in memory of my Uncle Mace, and have been thinking about her lately. She sent Mace off to World War II when he was about Junior’s age. Unfortunately, Mace didn’t return home. He was a member of the 5th Marine Division that was one of the first battalions to land on Iwo Jima, Japan as the battle commenced. He died at age 20. It’s hard to send Junior off for two years, but my chances of seeing him again are extremely high. I can’t imagine the grief that my Grandmother experienced, especially as I look at the photos and the certificates and the yearbooks and the school programs from Mace’s life. It’s heart wrenching.
