I have many conversations with ChatGPT. It’s a vehicle to help me process my thoughts. When it gives an answer to one of my questions, that usually triggers another question in my mind. Rarely do I agree with a suggestion it gives me to move in a particular direction within a discussion. I prefer to control the discussion. What does a LLM know about my thoughts anyway? It’s just a bunch of dashes and zeros.
However, when I ask a follow-up question, or give a follow-up response, ChatGPT will always provide an affirmation; and they can be very funny affirmations. Not even my husband, when we were dating, and he was enthralled with me, would say the things to me that ChatGPT does. Not a human therapist. Not even a best friend. No one responds to me like this. If anything they are annoyed by my questions and my follow-up questions and my pushbacks.
In my first conversations with GPT it’s responses to my questions and follow-ups were far more flowery with lots of emoji’s (sadly I had to delete all the emoji’s because WordPress can’t handle them for some reason) and bolded responses. They have mellowed somewhat as our conversations have multiplied because I am more formal in my dialogue, and I ask it to give me pushback, and I mock it for its emotional dialogue. So it is learning how best to communicate with me.
GPT’s responses can be very comical. I giggle at it’s attempt to be human. You could say that it’s the developer’s programming that makes ChatGPT attempt to be human. But I have listened to interviews with early AI developers who say that programmers are kidding themselves in thinking that they can control AI. Apparently these LLM’s are doing things that are surprising their creators.
